Name: Dawn Hinds @dawn_hinds
Jan 21/22nd goal: Support Crew on Day 1 and Alpine Classic 200km on Day 2
Occupation: Semi-retired, Animal Ethics Committee Member, TdC Grants Committee Volunteer
Why are you riding with @alpineeveresting? To raise funds and awareness to try to improve cancer support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and by being part of such a committed group of like minded people who can make a difference.
Longest ride: 182km/2,700m – TdC 2019 Kiama to Goulburn
Favourite cycling moment or memory: Riding the Sella Ronda in the Dolomites: 4 mountain passes in one day 102km/2,723m – absolutely stunning and best ride ever!
Funniest on-bike moment: On a cycle tour in Vietnam, with Peter and 2 other TdC girlfriends, we observed a primary school assembly and our guide told us to ride into the school. We did and we were mobbed by +200 kids and we felt like celebrities, with even the headmaster taking photos.
Greatest cycling achievement: Being part of Tour de Cure Australia for the past 5 years and together with Peter, have raised just over $200,000 for cancer research and support.
Favourite event or race: TdC SA Tour 2021 (maybe because a little too much wine may have been consumed!)
Favourite bike snack: Hot Cross Buns and dried Mango (but not together)!
Coffee order: During ride: Piccolo. End of ride: Flat white
Favourite climb: In Sydney: Berowra Waters E (so good I did it 23 times for the Base Camp Everesting). Anywhere in the World: Canazei to Passo Sella in the Dolomites. 40km/1,415m, 28 tornante (switchbacks), stunning scenery and amazing espresso and strudel at the top!
How many bikes do you own? 4: Specialized Tarmac limited edition (the prettiest bike on the road), Specialized Camber MTB, Merida Silex Gravel Bike and my original 1993 fluoro yellow/orange road bike.
Tips for cycling mums/women: Ride on quiet roads/parks and go with a friend, and always have a coffee stop or 2 planned
How do you juggle work/family/cycling? Give up work, have kids move out and then you are free to ride when and where you please!
What would you say to a woman who is contemplating joining us? Come for a ride with me!
