Why Alpine Everesting?
Love the challenge of two long days in the saddle, great country side and family support. And it sounded so much fun in a locked down winter.
Longest ride (in distance): Three Peaks
Longest ride (in learning): Falls Creek Ultimate Triathlon (I recall unclipping to do the turns and not appreciating that a ride in the mountains involved, well mountains)
Favourite cycling moments: Most rides with Alec (22 years) I am so fortunate to share this interest. And ok, beating Alec home in our first long course race (I had the endurance over his speed just this once!)
Greatest sporting achievement: The many female friendships across age groups.
Aug 2006 18km long run for my first half marathon (who knew a ‘non runner” could run that far? )
Ironman May 2019 – 9 Balance Tri club (7 first timers) women did the IM – we all followed very different training plans and all came home within an hour of each other. So so good.
10 November 2021 – DIY 9k open water swim – learning to swim is the hardest skill I have mastered as an adult
Favourite Event: Blackmore’s Running Festival – hard to beat an Opera House Finish
Coffee order: My husband rides the motorcycle to meet me on long rides and he bought a portable expresso machine – even after 35 years of marriage he is still a keeper.
Fave workout music: Sia, P!nk, Little Mix, Imagine Dragon and pull out Meatloaf and Jimmy Barnes when I need the bigger guns.
Tips for cycling mums: There is no one way to train and the consistency of raising kids is great brain training for keeping going on a hard ride – your headspace is as important (more so in my experience) as training hours.
How do I get into cycling? It is great if you can find a friend who rides – always ask as people are usually very glad to help.
What would you say to a women who is thinking about joining us?
When you say yes to one adventure, the next adventures are easier to say yes too – and look at other non sporting areas you have said yes too (relationships, jobs, travel).
