Name: Elly Warren @drelly_warren
January 21/22nd: Everesting Roam
Occupation: GP
Why are you riding with @alpineeveresting? Bec and I came up with this idea over a couple of random texts. I love that our January ambitions have become huge and that so many amazing women and men have reached to join us. We now have almost 50 riders and support crew on our team! Highlighting the disparities in cancer outcomes and helping to improve access to services and treatment for our First Nations friends is extremely important. It’s not ok that such inequality exists in our world class health system.
Longest ride: 340km, 8870m Taronga Zoo birthday Everest
Favourite cycling moment: Eating chocolate paddle pops with my kids on the 2nd last lap of my Bumble Hill Everest.
Greatest sporting achievements: NSW masters time trial champion, 2021 and kicking my 80th goal for Avoca FC (I was only counting to try to beat my nephew - he won by miles!)
Favourite endurance fuel: Pikelets and or baked potatoes with lots of salt
Number of bikes? 4 (2 for every year I’ve been riding )
Tips for cycling mums/women Involve your loved ones in your riding. You are role-modeling healthy lifestyle. Prioritising self care is good for the whole family.
How do you juggle work/family/cycling? My patients and colleagues know I love cycling and are big supporters of the fundraising campaigns so don’t mind when I’m away on adventures. I’ve even done some GP home visits during training rides! Super-supportive partner Tas loves endurance running so we tag-team training and family duties. Our kids love Tour de Cure Australia and are growing up thinking these events are a normal part of every day life.
How do I get into cycling? Find a social cycling group in your area (usually on Facebook or Insta) or through your local bike shop. It took me ages to meet other female cyclists. When out riding solo, I would literally chase down any women on bikes to ask them their names and how to reconnect! I still do this but try not to seem too stalker-y
What would you say to a woman contemplating joining our next adventure? You have super powers, we can help you harness them! Reach out and join us!
