Name: Peter Hinds @Hinds9816
Jan 21/22nd goal: Everesting Roam with Alpine Classic 200km on Day 2 (plus support as bike mechanic)
Occupation: part time program management contractor for Optus, Tour de Cure Australia bike mechanic
Why are you riding with @alpineeveresting? Riding & working with TdC has given me a huge awareness of the extra challenges some parts of our community face with cancer – so I’m keen to help the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to improve their awareness, prevention & treatment.
Longest ride: 220km – TdC 2015 Mt Gambier to Warnambool
Favourite cycling moment or memory: same as Dawn, riding the Sella Ronda in the Dolomites: 4 mountain passes in one day 102km/2,723m – absolutely stunning and best ride ever (fuelled by Italian coffee & German struedel)!
Funniest on-bike moment: did a skills course when just learning to mtb, touched my brakes at the wrong time going down a steep, technical rocky singletrack chute. Ended up with the bike vertical on its front wheel, still clipped into the pedals leaning on a conveniently positioned tree. Mates had to lower me down.
Greatest cycling or sporting achievement: 11th overall in Mountains to Beach, 4th in age category at L’Etape, a few age category wins in 4hr mtb races : plus raising >$200k with Dawn for TdC.
Favourite event or race: Mountains to Beach mtb stage race – 5 days from the top of Thredbo chairlift to the beach at Narooma.
Coffee order: During ride: Piccolo. End of ride: Flat white
Favourite climb: Punto Veleno at Lake Garda in Italy – 1000m vertical in 6.5km.
How many bikes do you own? 6½: Giant TCR SL0 for climbing & road, Focus Mares with one wheelset for road touring & one for gravel/CX, a Trek 1.7 on our indoor trainer, Scott Scale hardtail mtb for racing & firetrails, DeVinci Atlas mtb for fun on the trails & a Norco Range for downhill & enduro mtb
Tips for endurance riding: train well, pace yourself, free your mind & the legs will follow!
How do you juggle work/family/cycling? Easy really – just get the entire family into cycling (expensive but it works!)
