Name: James Holbeck aka Jimmy aka Bone
Occupation: National Manager of Player Development @ The Rugby Union Player’s Association
How did you get into riding?
I was asked to ride with The Fathering Project in 2019 as part of their fundraising drive to help engage dads in schools, which aligned perfectly with my Masters in Family Studies majoring in Fatherhood. Never thought I’d don the lycra and ride on the road.
Why are you riding with @alpineeveresting?
It scares me enough to drive both self-doubt and fear but also the desire to overcome those things by getting out of bed early in order to achieve something worthwhile. I do hate the politicising of social issues when they get in the way of simple solutions and so see this as an opportunity to produce a tangible outcome for improving cancer diagnosis for aboriginal people by raising funds for a cultural health officer.
Longest ride - A few 160km rides.
Favourite Cycling moment - Completing the Base Camp Everesting this year on the anniversary of my mum’s passing, two years ago.
Greatest Sporting Moment: The first run-on game for the Australian Wallabies against England in front of friends and family at the Sydney Football Stadium or fighting back from 4 years of injury to play the last 5 minutes in the decider for Australia’s first ever series win against the British & Irish Lions in 2001 at a sold-out Homebush Stadium.
Favourite endurance food: Baked sweet potato, peanut butter & honey sandwiches, bananas, bars.
Coffee order: Chai Latte or Cappuccino
Favourite Climb: North Brother at North Haven which is a local climb, just for the achievement of enduring a 10% average gradient over 4kms and the views from the lookout.
How many bikes do you own?
Two - a road bike and a 13 year old Mountain bike.
Favourite workout music: Haven’t ever got into listening to music while I ride but I do sing aloud when I’m riding by myself to something like The Cars ‘Just what I needed’.
