Name: Nicole Brunt @nic_brunt
Jan 21/22nd goal: Everesting Roam Occupation: Intensive Care Nurse Why are you riding with @alpineeveresting? I love everything this team is striving for- raising money for an amazing cause, increasing awareness around the healthcare gap between indigenous and white Australians, and lastly I’m passionate about empowering more women to take up cycling- its such a ‘mans’ sport and its easy to be discouraged when starting out due to the issue of sexism so if we can get more women doing amazing things it can only be a step in the right direction. Longest ride: Just recently our Everest Base Camp ride (10hrs / 207kms and 29 reps up Akuna Bay hill for 4424m elevation). My longest prior to that was a tour around Noosa hinterlands- 160kms in around 6hrs with my friend and now housemate. Prior to this my first 100k ride was only in February (9 months ago) Favourite cycling memory: Riding with my mate Kat in Noosa and getting to the famous Kenilworth bakery 100km into the ride and seeing the array of head-sized donuts. Then subsequently trying to vomit it back up on the way home. Funniest on-bike moment: almost running over a diamond python going down akuna bay then listening to the rest of the crew (all English) scream as they swerved it behind me. Greatest sporting achievement: I came second once in the Glencoe Scottish highland marathon - a Trail/fell run of 45km with >2000m elevation. There was a huge storm, there was sleet on top of the mountains and I’ve still never seen rain quite like it. It took almost 8hrs. Though I’m pretty sure most of the other females either withdrew or got lost. Favourite event or race: Challenge Wanaka 70.3 Triathlon 2020- my first proper triathlon, just so scenic and such a fun day with perfect conditions and my longest cycle at the time. Favourite endurance fuel: I use a mix! Whatever is at hand really. I quite like the Gu gels and the Clif Bloks though for condensed sugar. I also love Nuun strawberry lemonade electrolytes and a blue Powerade never gets old. Favourite bike snack: Cliff bars are easiest to eat in my experience. Coffee order: Soy latte- Large and extra hot. Favourite workout music: Fat Freddys drop- check them out. Favourite climb: Akuna (still, some how) I prefer the longer gradual climbs. How many bikes do you own? 2 - my road bike, a Merida Juliet i purchased late 2019 as my first proper bike. I only paid $450 in NZL! Then this year I bought my beautiful LIV TT bike, Pamela (named after Pamela Anderson of course) Tips for endurance riding: I’m still the student! But invest in the bib shorts and glasses. Tips for cycling women: Just find a friend or even someone you barely know to start cycling with, it makes you get up and do it. How do you juggle work/family/cycling? My job is 50% night shifts so sometimes its tricky trying to train when you’re tired. But mostly it works well. How do I get into cycling if I’m a girl who hasn’t ridden much before but is super keen? Reach out to a friend/neighbour/colleague, ask lots of questions, get in touch with someone else who rides and if you can join a club or training group so you can ride safely with others. What would you say to a woman who is contemplating joining our next adventure? If you’re still thinking about the challenge after two days, just do it! The rest will work itself out. Make a plan to get to your big goal, get a coach or ask for advice if you’re not sure!
